As a coach or heart-centered entrepreneur, you know you need to make plans for your business. In fact, you probably coach your own clients to create plans all of the time. But as you also know, not all planning is created equally. And when it comes to all things marketing for your coaching biz, a 90-day marketing plan may just be the sweet spot you’ve been searching for.
Now, I didn’t just haphazardly latch on to 90 days as the magic number for this plan. A lot of trial and error by yours truly (and many other experts), brought me to the belief that a 90-day marketing plan is optimal for your business.
And in this week’s blog, I’m breaking down those reasons for you and as well as giving you some insight into the specific areas of your business you need to be paying attention to as you create your very own.
Here are 3 Reasons Why Your Life Coaching Business Needs a 90-Day Marketing Plan AND the Goals You Need to Pay Attention to When Creating One.
Reason #1 You Need a 90-Day Marketing Plan: It’s Not Too Big…Or Too Small to Plan For
When it comes to planning for your business, a 90-day marketing plan is the Goldilocks-endorsed sweet spot in terms of size and scope. 90 days is neither too long nor too short to create impactful changes in your coaching business. (And it’s enough time to actually measure the changes you are creating, but more on that in a minute.)
Yes, you should plan for and create your content month by month. You don’t need to be writing your social posts for December in September or October because you always want to make your copy to be timely and relevant. However, your monthly posts should also exist within the bigger picture and goals of the 90-day marketing plan for your business.
Also, yes, you should have some annual goals that act as a sort of North Star for your quarterly plans, but when it comes to taking action, making plans for the whole year at once is daunting, to say the least. And annual plans don’t give you the wiggle room you often need to pivot when your year (hello, 2020) takes an unexpected turn.
Life happens. Business happens. And you need to be ready to move accordingly.
Reason #2 You Need a 90-Day Marketing Plan: You Can Easily Measure It
Every quarter, my clients and I assess several different measurements in terms of success:
- Income – Are you making what you want to and need to make in your business?
- Freedom – How are you spending your time? Do you have the work-life balance you crave?
- Impact – How are the lives of your clients being changed? Who are you reaching with your business?
Measuring these three pillars of success every month is possible, but may not always be enough time to see the shifts that are happening for you or the people you’re serving. And waiting to measure these things at the end of the year may mean you’re missing crucial opportunities to make changes as you go.
Taking in the big picture once every 90 days gives you a perfect measure of what you’ve been doing and vital information for what you want to do in the next quarter ahead. It’s a reasonable amount to focus on at one time.
Reason #3 You Need a 90-Day Marketing Plan: Achievable Project Planning
If you’re like most of the amazing, creative, heart-centered coaches and entrepreneurs I serve, you have a LOT of brilliant ideas bouncing around in your head. And when you set annual goals, it’s super easy to spout off dozens of ideas that you’d like to accomplish before the next New Year’s countdown starts.
However, that’s also way too much to focus on at once, and eventually, overwhelm from your ideas can clobber you and cause you not to take action on anything. Or you can take action on too many things at once and lose focus on the impact of any one project.
With a 90-day marketing plan, you can still focus on multiple goals and projects. In fact, I recommend one big project a month (so in 90 days you get to plan for three), but you’re not focusing on so many that you lose momentum.
Side note: I will also say that one thing I love to do with my big-dreaming clients is to keep a bank of ideas they have and every 90 days, we go into that bank and see what should be next. When you do this, sometimes you’ll get really fired up about an idea you previously had, and sometimes you’ll revisit it and realize it might not be the direction you want to head after all. Either way, you win and your business benefits!

Goals are great, but here are the specific areas of your business that you should be looking at every quarter when you set your next round of intentions:
- Customer Experience
- Finances and Profit
- Operations (systems, ease, flow)
- Team (adding to, training, addressing issues)
- Personal Development
- Product Development (adding new offers, getting rid of non-converting offers)
When you break down your business and your marketing goals into these areas, you’re going to get a fuller picture and ultimately set yourself up to rock the next quarter!
