You know you need to build your email list. 

Because without an email list, you don’t have ownership of your prospects.  Yes, you can sell on social media.  Of course, you can network and bring in leads that way.  But email marketing is one of the most effective ways to nurture cold prospects and convert them into paying customers.  How do most successful coaches build their email list?  Through an effective lead magnet.

Lead magnets come in so many different forms…

  • Short form eBooks
  • Checklists and Templates
  • eCourses and Video courses
  • Case studies
  • Cheat Sheets
  • Free Consultations
  • Intros to your work (1st chapter of book, meditation, food plans, audios from a course)
  • Complete guides
  • And…

Quizzes.

Quizzes are hot!  And this is the type of lead magnet I want you to create for your coaching business in 2021.  People love quizzes.  As humans, we are inherently curious.  We want to learn more about ourselves, test our knowledge, and be entertained and distracted.  And quizzes provide the solution.

Don’t believe me?  Have you ever been sucked into one of Facebook’s MANY Nametest quizzes?  Or how about Cosmopolitan’s quizzes “Are You in Love?” or “What’s Your Sex Position IQ?”  Ever taken the Myers Briggs, StrengthsFinder, or Enneagram assessments?  These are all quizzes that promise to give you more insight into yourself.  And they work.

There are 3 types of quizzes that are popular with your coaching prospects:

  1. Personality quiz (most popular as a lead magnet)
  2. Tally quiz (Cosmo does a great job with these)
  3. Assessment quiz (least likely to be used for lead generation)

Think for a moment about whether you would want to take any of these quizzes…

  • What’s your leadership style?
  • Find your sales making superpower
  • Should you hire a coach or consultant?
  • What’s your content marketing style?
  • Is your coaching business prepared for growth?
  • What’s your hidden limiting belief?
  • What kind of coaching is right for you?
  • What’s your stress score?
  • What’s your website vibe?
  • What is your writing style?

I’m guessing you are curious about at least one of these potential quizzes.  And the same goes for your prospects.

In addition to the curiosity factor, quizzes allow you to segment your audience based on results from the quiz.  With segmentation, you can tailor your email marketing to the immediate needs of your prospects.  Everyone has different personalities, needs, pain points, etc.  Without segmentation, you are only speaking to a small group of people that might relate to your message.

But think about how powerful you could be if you knew exactly who you were talking to, what they needed from you and how you could resolve their problems.  For example, if you were a leadership coach and you know that there are at least 4-5 common styles of leaders, you would be able to segment these leaders based on their styles…

  • The Visionary
  • The People-Focused Leader
  • The Growth Leader
  • The Operational Leader

Each of these styles of leaders are driven by different things.  They have their own unique sets of strengths and weaknesses.  So if you can tailor your emails to their individual problems and opportunities, your audience will feel like you are speaking directly to them.  This is way more powerful than sending generic emails that may or may not resonate with the reader.

What Are the Elements of Your Quiz Lead Magnet?

Putting together your quiz lead magnet requires careful planning and there are several elements to consider when designing your quiz.

Set your quiz lead magnet goals

Nikki Clark, the creator of the Brand Power Quiz Method, identifies 5 questions to ask yourself in the strategy phase of your quiz planning process.

  • What do you want to be known for?
  • What is your list growth target for the next 6 to 12 months?
  • For the offers that will map to your quiz, what are your revenue targets?
  • What type of quiz will you create?
  • Which funnel will you build? (book a call, webinar, tripwire)

Create your quiz title and subtitle

Your title and subtitle, just like any marketing heading, should be compelling and speak directly to your target audience’s needs and desires.

Outline your quiz results

Your quiz results will be the outcomes that you wish to use to segment your audience.  Depending on the type of quiz you are designing, think about the end result that users will receive.  (i.e. Clifton Strengths assessment identifies 34 different strengths.  These strengths are the quiz results)

Design questions that produce the end quiz results

Ideally, you will have 7-10 questions that contain 3 or 6 different options to choose from.  Carefully plan these questions because the answer to each question should map to a particular end result.  Ask yourself what are the defining characteristics for each of your “segments” or quiz results.  Then design your questions based on these characteristics.

Map your answers to the quiz results

If you have 4 different quiz results, the answers to your questions should map to your end result.  For instance, if the quiz taker chose B for question 2, that maps to End Result A.  If the quiz taker chose C for question 2, that maps to End Result B.  Draw out a flow chart so you can easily map all your answers to results.

Set up your quiz in a quiz software application.

Once your quiz is planned out, you will need to set up your quiz in a software application designed to deliver the quiz to your audience.  It should be visually appealing and easy to navigate for your users.
