Hello!

Yesterday I felt completely torn.  One arm was being pulled in the direction of mompreneur.  My other arm was being pulled in the direction of mom.  About three weeks ago I registered for a three day Raymond Aaron seminar that one of my mastermind peers had invited me to. At the time, my schedule looked good, and my husband felt he could handle the weekend by himself.  As the event drew near, I realized I overlooked something very significant.  It was the weekend before Spring Break, and my college son was arriving home the day before the event began.

The mom side of me was saying “You can’t go to that event!  As soon as you say hello to your son who hasn’t seen you in 3 months, you are going to turn around and say goodbye for three days.  And what a way to start your other son’s Spring Break! He’s looking forward to having some fun and you’re going to be gone the whole weekend!” {insert Mommy guilt here} The mompreneur side of me is chatting too.  “You made a commitment to Melanie to be at this event.  She is a mom with four kids and she is getting away.  What is wrong with you?  What kind of business person are you that can’t keep your commitments?” {insert Mompreneur guilt here}

Ever have this type of scenario happen to you?  How do you resolve these situations and still experience peace within?  Here are some tips to guide you through the process:

  1. Understand that all the mind chatter serves a purpose in the beginning.  You are simply trying to work through the internal conflict that you are experiencing.  However, staying in this place of internal chaos does not help you and only increases your stress.
  2. So allow yourself some space to get quiet and hear what is truly important to you.  Be willing to ask yourself some tough questions and be completely honest with your answers.  How will my decision affect family relationships?  How will my decision affect business relationships? Will this opportunity be available at another time?  Will this opportunity affect my business bottom line, or my family’s future?  Is there a way to split between business and family with this decision, or is it all or nothing?
  3. Make your decision based on your priority for this decision and this moment.  If you choose your business over your family, it does not mean your family is not important, and vice versa.  Both family and business are important for different reasons.  They support one another.
  4. Accept your decision without guilt.  Be comfortable with your priorities, and stand grounded with your choices. Communicate your reasons with confidence to anyone who is involved.  Move forward with grace.

Perhaps you are wondering what I decided to do about this weekend.  Family first.  For me, there was not enough business payoff to sacrifice my relationships with my family. I knew a fellow mompreneur would understand my choice.
