We are less than 30 days away from a brand new year, and you know what that means. Putting 2021 behind us and looking forward to new opportunities. This is the time of year that most coaches and course creators are thinking about what’s possible for their business and ways they want to plan their strategic growth for the next year. It can be a time of excitement, but it can also come with feelings of apprehension.
Some of you may be crazy busy right now and working hard to finish the year strong. Others might be taking a battery out to enjoy some rest and relaxation during the holiday season. Wherever you are right now, just know that it’s okay. Business growth should be planned to fit your ideal lifestyle. But your growth can’t happen without a solid strategic plan.
So for the rest of this month, I want you to make space to clear these five obstacles so that you are ready and able to create the business of your dreams in 2022.
Obstacle #1: A Lack of Time Will Block Your Strategic Growth
The most important space you can create on your calendar, if you want to experience business growth, is CEO time. Every week, carve out time in your schedule to put on your strategic owner hat. Review your current goals. Set new goals. Ask yourself what’s working well in your business and what needs attention. Look at your financials and KPIs. Review important decisions that need to be made in your business. Meet with key, strategic partners for planning purposes. And please don’t forget the all too important – CEO self-care.
A lack of time for CEO space is one of the toughest challenges that we all face as business owners. But without it, you are seriously hindering your business growth. You need the headspace to reflect, plan, innovate and rest. Pick your least busy day and carve out a couple of hours for this valuable time. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish with the quiet time and commitment to your strategic business growth.
Obstacle #2: Strategic Growth Requires Clarity
Have you ever been in that space where you just didn’t have clarity about what’s next in your business? I can tell you from experience working with many clients (and myself) that this is TOTALLY normal! Clarity takes time and often we don’t have the patience to wait for it. It doesn’t happen overnight and it’s not uncommon for it to appear out of nowhere.
When we are caught up in our day-to-day business activities, we often don’t create the headspace and reflection time that it takes to become clear. Clarity is one of those elusive states of mind that comes from very intentional action. Those actions could be meditation, journaling, trying on new ideas and evaluating what “feels” right, waiting for the Universe to send you a sign and saying no to what doesn’t align with you.
One of the most effective ways to get clarity is to brainstorm with a strategic partner.
This could be a coach, a business bestie, a mastermind, a supportive spouse or anyone else that can listen without judgment. We often need to hear ourselves think out loud. That is why I offer breakthrough strategy sessions for coaches and course creators that need to gain clarity on next steps in their business growth.
Obstacle #3: A Solid Support Team is Crucial
Strategic growth cannot happen alone. Your team is the most valuable asset you have in your arsenal of tools to help you scale. Being a CEO means that you need to stay in your zone of genius. And for most coaches and course creators, your zone of brilliance is in coaching, educating, and serving your clients.
That doesn’t mean you are not skilled in other areas such as marketing, sales or any other area of your business. It merely means that working in the back end of your business is not the best use of your time and it will ultimately keep you from growing into a multi-six or seven-figure business
A solid support team should include the “right” people to cover the major areas of your business that you should not be or don’t want to be handling. That could be financials, copywriting, design, business management, marketing, sales, etc. And to take it one step further, each of these members of your support team should also be working in their zone of genius, while also being a great cultural fit. This ensures you have top-notch talent to support your strategic growth.
Obstacle #4: A Fixed Mindset Will Hinder Your Strategic Growth
What is the #1 obstacle you will face on your way to multi-six and seven-figures in your business? You guessed it. Your mindset. Specifically your beliefs about money, your business, yourself, your competition, and others. One of the best books I’ve read recently about mindset is “Mindset” by Dr. Carol Dweck. What an eye-opener.
We often don’t realize all the thoughts and beliefs that we have learned over the years that hinder our potential. Fixed beliefs that are so automatic and require total rewiring to enact real change. The best way to begin changing these beliefs is to first start noticing them. Then you can begin to challenge the validity of these beliefs. And ultimately you can replace these fixed beliefs with a growth mindset.
One of my clients recently shared a very thought-provoking video about conscious leadership. Take a listen to this video and ask yourself “are you above the line or below the line?” If you’re below the line, what beliefs need to change to contribute to your strategic growth in 2022?
Obstacle #5: Inefficient Systems and Processes
Recently I was hired as an associated coach with a highly successful 7-figure coaching company that specializes in helping course creators launch their offers successfully. One thing stood out to me as I was going through their onboarding process. They have their systems and processes dialed in.
When you are new in business (pre-$100k), you can almost get away with not having systems and processes in place. But as soon as you start adding team members and scaling into multi-six and seven figures, your systems and processes are crucial. Sarah Noked, a trainer for certified online business managers, recently said “Systems didn’t use to be sexy, but now I’ve noticed they are top of mind for business owners.”
That is because they can make or break a business. Inefficient systems and processes cost your business money, time, and ultimately your reputation. They create the difference between a stress-filled day and a smoothly functioning business.
Your systems can include your day-to-day operational procedures, as well as the software you use to manage these processes. Make sure you have your systems defined, documented, evaluated for efficiency, and updated on a regular basis. Replace inefficient software with software that adds automation, structure, and simplicity to your business and life.
